As you probably all know, two months ago I quit my account management job in a digital marketing agency to pursue a freelance career, in search of a better work/life balance.
The prospect of not having guaranteed income every month to cover my mortgage and bills was unsettling, but nowhere near as terrifying as the thought of not trying and living to regret it.
What drove me to leave my salary and job security behind? I wanted to take back my precious time to dedicate it to friends, family, and my writing. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – I lost my freedom of speech on my blog because of my lack of free time. I’m taking that time back now, though!
I recently finished my last working week as an employee, before going on my self-employed venture. The last couple of days was a bit of a blur, it was incredibly busy and I didn’t want to leave anything undone. Occasionally, I had an overwhelming fear of thinking ‘WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING!?’, but otherwise I was pretty pumped.
With half a day holiday remaining, I decided my last working day would finish at 12 o’clock! S and I packed our bags and headed to Dartmoor National Park for a weekend away from technology to wild camp. I won’t go into too much detail because I’ve got a series of blog posts in my drafts, as I type!
A couple of days later, I’m back in the office; the only difference is that it’s my office and not someone else’s. I can’t tell you what it’s like to be a freelancer yet, I can’t tell you if it works but what I can tell you is there are a lot of exciting opportunities in the mix. This includes a lot more blogging, videos, and even some coaching.
I’m dedicating this week to getting everything in order. I’m determined to stick to my 9am – 5pm regime, for now, focusing on sales and marketing. My business cards arrived this week, the flyers are being processed and my training materials are all in development, I’ve also got a few of meetings with potential clients, my accountant, and family.
Despite being a little stressful, it’s all super exciting right now, and I plan to keep you in the loop.
I feel like I’ve barely had time to think this past week or so. I’ve been rushed off my feet, but I’ve had to take a step back and remember that I can’t just have tunnel vision, such as taking Petal to the vets, and writing my dissertation proposal.
It’s not all doom and gloom, I also need to unpack so I can re-pack for a weekend away again! I’ve barely been back in my own bed, but incredibly S are off on another mini-break, so keep stay tuned! It’s JUST what we need after the stress of university and organising my freelance projects.
What do you have planned this week?
