7 Reasons Berlin Is Now On My 2016 Bucket List

You will discover many beautiful Gothic architectural sights, museums, art, as well as historical buildings and landmarks to keep you busy for a couple of days.  But, let’s face it, I’m a sucker for what’s beyond the city borders.

Steal yourself away from the hustle and bustle of city life to discover some of the surrounding places. After a bit of research, we’ve found that to explore different areas and reach nearby points from Berlin, it’s best to hire a luxury car through companies operating in Europe like Primerent.

  Conveniently located around 30 minutes from Berlin, you will find that Potsdam offers a lot of things to every visitor. There are palaces with their charming gardens such as the ones located on Sanssouci Park, Babelsberg Castle and Park, the Marble Palace and its gardens. You can also visit the Russian and Dutch quarters with their picturesque neighbourhoods.  


  About an hour’s travel from Berlin, this artificial forest and lowland is mainly made up of beautiful meadows and ramifications of the Spree. Take a boat ride to enjoy the rustic surroundings.  


  In just over 2 hours, you will arrive in the amazing city of Dresden with its idyllic locations on the banks of the Elbe River. Known as the “Florence at the Elbe,” this place is home to various Baroque architecture, world-class museums and beer gardens!   You can also get your calves working with a hike in the Saxon Switzerland National Park near Dresden. It forms the Elbe Sandstone Mountains together with the Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic making up to a thousand climbing peaks and several hollows.

Mecklenburgische Seenplatte

This area is one of the most popular East German vacation areas. It is composed of lakes and canals thus earning its name, “the land of thousand lakes.” You can find several nature parks, rich in their unique flora and fauna. This area is a favorite among water sports enthusiasts.

For those who would want to see how concentration camps were, this is worth a visit. Not as popular as Auschwitz or Dachau, it is equally as moving as any other. Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was one of the most important camps during the Third Reich and can be reached in about 30 minutes.


Located 25km north of Berlin, this little German village is composed of a number of old churches, beautiful lakes, woods, and lowland marshes. Windsurfing and horseback riding are some of the preferred activities aside from the lakeside favorite, sunbathing. The former summer home of Joseph Goebbels is also located here.


Not very far from the city of Berlin, Kladow provides an easy respite from everyday city life, offering much-needed tranquility and relaxation by the lake. You might even spot squirrels as you explore the popular walking trails across the Havel River. You can just take the ferry to arrive at this very scenic and natural spot, a mere minutes away from the city.
